BEAUTY SHOULD LEAVE A LIGHTER FOOTPRINT.

Our Commitment to a More Sustainable Salon Experience

Taking care of people has always been at the heart of what we do. We believe taking care of our community means thinking about more than what happens inside the salon.

It means thinking about what happens to the hair on the floor after your haircut. The foil used during your color service. The color left in the bowl. The water running through our shampoo basins. The packaging our products arrive in. The electricity that powers our dryers, lights and tools.

Beginning September 1, 2026, Herdis and Parker on Main are making a significant new commitment to reducing the environmental impact of the services we provide.

As part of that commitment, a 4% Environmental Impact Fee will be added to all salon services.

This fee supports the programs, partnerships, equipment, recycling services and operational investments that allow us to reduce waste, conserve resources and make more responsible choices throughout our businesses.

And we want you to know exactly what that means.

SMALLER FOOTPRINT. REAL ACTION.

Sustainability can become a word businesses use very easily. We are more interested in what we can actually do. Salons are resource-intensive businesses. We use water. We use electricity. We work with foils, plastics, chemicals, packaging, gloves, towels, product containers and countless other materials every day.

Some of that impact is unavoidable. A great deal of it is not. So rather than make one symbolic change, we are looking at our environmental footprint from multiple directions at once.

KEEPING BEAUTY WASTE OUT OF LANDFILLS AND WATERWAYS

One of our most significant new partnerships is with Green Circle Salons, an organization created specifically to address the unusual waste generated by the professional beauty industry.

Traditional recycling programs simply are not designed for many of the materials salons use every day. Green Circle's specialized recovery system allows participating salons to divert materials including hair clippings, used foils, color tubes, excess hair color, plastics and other salon waste from conventional disposal.

Green Circle reports that its system can recover up to 95% of a salon's beauty waste, depending on the waste streams being collected. Their landfill-free systems are independently verified, and Green Circle has been a Certified B Corporation since 2019.

That matters to us because throwing something into a recycling bin only feels good if we know what happens next. We want our efforts to result in actual recovery, responsible processing and reuse wherever possible.

USING LESS FROM THE START

Recycling responsibly matters. But one of the best ways to reduce waste is to avoid creating it in the first place.

That is where Vish Color Management comes in.

Every custom color service requires our stylists to mix professional hair color specifically for the guest in their chair. Traditionally, determining exactly how much color to mix has involved some educated guesswork—and across thousands of salon visits, even small amounts of unused product can add up.

Vish gives our team a much more precise way to work. Using connected scales and intelligent color-management technology, Vish records how much product is used during each service and how much remains afterward. Over time, it helps refine each guest's formula so that at their next appointment, we can mix closer to the amount we actually need.

That means:

  • Less excess color mixed.
  • Less product discarded.
  • Less unnecessary packaging and inventory consumed.
  • Less chemical waste requiring recovery and processing.

And because Vish saves each guest's precise color history, sustainability does not come at the expense of consistency. Our colorists can recreate and adjust formulas with extraordinary accuracy while continuing to reduce unnecessary product use.

USING LESS WATER EVERY TIME WE RINSE

Water is one of the beauty industry's most important resources.

It is also one of its most heavily used.

Think about how many times water runs during a single salon day: shampoos, color removal, conditioning treatments, cleaning, laundry and sanitation.

Multiply that by every guest, every stylist, every day.

Through our partnership with Sustain Beauty Co, we are investing in salon-specific technologies and practices designed to reduce both water consumption and the energy required to heat that water.

ECOHEADS salon technology, for example, is designed to maintain an effective salon rinse while reducing water and energy consumption by as much as 65% during rinsing.

That means sustainability does not have to come at the expense of your salon experience.

In many cases, better technology allows us to do more with less.

CHOOSING RENEWABLE ENERGY

Reducing what we use matters.

So does thinking about where our energy comes from.

Herdis and Parker have chosen Sterling Planet as part of our renewable electricity strategy.

Sterling Planet has worked in renewable energy for more than two decades and provides renewable-energy programs and Renewable Energy Certificates designed to support electricity generated from renewable resources. Its Massachusetts program includes renewable electricity from regional wind and hydroelectric sources.

For businesses like ours, electricity powers almost everything we do.

Our lighting. Our dryers. Our hot tools. Our washing equipment. Our computers. Our heating and cooling systems.

Changing how we think about that energy is an important part of reducing our overall impact.

WORKING WITH AN INDUSTRY THAT IS CHANGING

We also believe sustainability requires looking carefully at the companies whose products we use every day.

Herdis and Parker are L'Oréal Professional Products salons, and L'Oréal has made sustainability within the professional salon industry a specific area of focus.

Through its Hairstylists for the Future initiative, L'Oréal Professional Products is working with salons on water-saving technology, refill systems, renewable energy partnerships, hair-waste recovery and multi-stream recycling.

Since the program launched in 2022, L'Oréal reports that more than 62,000 salons have adopted at least one of its sustainability solutions.

We believe large manufacturers have an important role to play in changing the environmental footprint of our industry, and we want to support partners who are investing in that work.

WHY AN ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT FEE?

Beginning September 1, a 4% Environmental Impact Fee will be added to every service at Herdis and Parker on Main.

We have chosen to make the fee visible rather than quietly building these costs into our service pricing.

The fee helps support the specialized recycling programs, renewable-energy commitments, water-saving equipment, responsible waste processing and ongoing operational changes required to reduce our environmental impact.

  • A $50 service will include a $2 Environmental Impact Fee.
  • A $100 service will include a $4 Environmental Impact Fee.
  • A $200 service will include an $8 Environmental Impact Fee.

We understand that 4% is meaningful. We believe the commitment it supports should be meaningful too.

That is why this is not one recycling bin tucked behind the front desk.

It is a broader effort to reconsider how two local salons purchase, consume, conserve, recycle and dispose of the resources required to care for thousands of guests each year.

THIS IS THE BEGINNING.

Our Environmental Impact Program began September 1, 2026 but our work will continue evolving.

As new technologies become available and our partners develop new ways to recover materials, conserve resources and improve the sustainability of professional beauty, we will continue looking for opportunities to bring those solutions into our salons.

Because feeling beautiful should never require us to stop caring about the beautiful place we call home.
